MT loses seventh match in a row
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee (1-8) lost another tough three-set match Saturday to the K-State Wildcats (8-1), a team receiving votes in the AVCA Top-25 Coaches Poll.
Miri Shade had a big night as she earned 11 kills, just two off her career high and Makila York surpassed her career high with nine kills and led the Blue Raiders in hitting at .467.
Brianna Pannone again led the team in assists with 16, but right on her heals was Delaney Taylor with 15 of her own. Libero Jaqueline Lux was able to pick up 23 digs defensively for Middle Tennessee.
The Blue Raiders began the first set a little sluggish as K-State took an early 6-0 lead and never looked back. MT seemingly had no answer for Brooke Sassin who hit .571 with four kills in the first frame, or Alyssa Schultejans who also earned four kills with a .500 hitting percentage. As a team the Wildcats outhit Middle Tennessee .406 to .053 in the first set, winning it easily 25-12. But then they played the second set.
MT came out on fire as they took nine of the first 11 points in the frame. Pannone had good luck finding her teammates as she earned eight of her 16 assists in the set. Chelsea Ross, York and Shade combined for 11 kills during the frame and the Blue Raiders were able to build a 22-16 lead. However, a couple of K-State points gave them all the momentum they needed and the Wildcats were able to steal the second set from MT's fingers, 25-22.
K-State turned the tables on the Raiders in the third frame as the Wildcats earned eight of the first 10 points of the set. K-State again turned to Sassin who hit .429 with three kills as Zsofia Gyimes also picked up three kills and hit .333. MT was able to close the gap to 12-10 with an 8-4 run, but that's as close as the Blue Raiders got as K-State wrapped up the match with a 25-18 set victory.
Middle Tennessee will be back in action again Sunday as they continue their stretch of five matches in five days. The Blue Raiders take on the Missouri State Bears (6-3) at Alumni Memorial Gym at 2pm.
