HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Middle Tennessee came up empty-handed in its regular season finale Sunday, falling 4-0 at Southern Miss.
Maddy Kim made her first career start in goal for the season finale, logging six saves in 90 minutes of action.
Middle Tennessee got off to a hot start offensively, logging five shots with a pair by Angie Lai and Courteney Gibson that were on frame in the first 13 minutes of the contest.
The action slowed momentarily before USM was awarded a penalty kick in the 21st minute. Kim came up with the save but less than a minute later the Eagles went up 1-0 on a goal by Stephanie Garcia.
Southern Miss had a few more chances in the ensuing minutes and five more total the remainder of the first half compared to just one by the Blue Raiders.
The Eagles came out firing in the second half and took less than two minutes to double their lead as Becky McMullan made the score 2-0 in the 47th minute.
Middle Tennessee attempted to fight back into the game with a quick succession of shots from Amber Hoot, Casey Riemer and Haley Nishimoto but each attempt came up empty.
Southern Miss took a commanding, 3-0, lead in the 60th minute when Garcia bagged her second goal of the match.
Less than six minutes later Garcia completed the hat trick, putting USM ahead 4-0 in the 66th minute and putting the Eagles on cruise control the remainder of the match.
The loss will conclude the season for Middle Tennessee who will miss the Conference USA tournament for the first time in the last three seasons and will now look to bounce back in 2017.
