The Freshman Placed 2nd in his 2nd Collegiate Race
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Freshman Jacob Choge was named the Conference USA Male Athlete of the Week for his stellar performance in the Greater Louisville Classic, the conference office announced this afternoon.
This is Choge's second C-USA Athlete of the Week Award in his last two races. The freshman won his first award after his outstanding performance in the Commodore Classic and now his second for his impressive time in Louisville, Ky.
In just Choge's second collegiate race, the freshman finished second among some of the nation's top runners and led the Middle Tennessee men's team to a second place finish Saturday. The Kapsabet City, Kenya native ran a personal best 23:37.03 in the 8k against top power five schools.
Choge's 23:37.03 time in the 8k is one of the best in recent Middle Tennessee history, surpassing his own record 24:03.7 time two weeks prior in the Commodore Classic 8k. After just two races, he is ranked as the No. 19 cross country runner in the nation, according to FloTrack.
Associate Head Coach Keith Vroman is impressed with Choge's performance this season.
"I'm very proud of Jacob," Vroman said. "He has shown that he can adapt to a different style of training than he is used to. He has worked hard and the results speak for themselves."
The team is currently ranked No. 2 in the South Region and ranked nationally for the first time in program history. The team looks to continue its winning streak in two weeks at the UTC Front Runner Invitational in Chattanooga, Tenn.
