Blue Raiders prep for home-opener Friday
MORAGA, Calif. — On the final day of the Saint Mary's Tournament, Middle Tennessee dropped a pair of matches in four sets to Saint Mary's and UC Riverside.
Regan Coughlin paced the Raider offense against SMC with 11 kills, while Bailey Mason added 10. Meg Irvin earned the start at libero and turned in a match-high 20 digs along with an ace.
In the first match of the day, MT jumped out to a fast start to lead the host Gaels.
The Blue Raiders built a 6-1 lead behind an offensive spark from Makila York, Coughlin and Mason. Saint Mary's rallied with a 12-4 run late in the set to claim its first lead of the day, but a kill from York and an assisted block by York and Vonnie Covington put the Raiders back in front before Coughlin scored the final point to give the Raiders the 25-23 win.
The Gaels would answer to open the second set, as they quickly established a 7-1 lead. SMC took advantage of eight Blue Raider errors and surged to a 25-12 set win to even the match.
The third set provided the most thrilling action in the match, as both teams traded points throughout the frame. The Raiders and Gaels saw the scoreboard tied 11 times before SMC took control with a 22-19 lead. The Raiders began a comeback by forcing two errors, but the Gaels bested the Raiders late to earn a 25-23 win.
Saint Mary's used the set three momentum to build an 8-2 lead in the fourth that expanded to a 16-5 advantage. MT offered another rally, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome as the Gaels took the fourth set 25-11 to win the match.
Despite outhitting and matching in digs, MT dropped the final match of the weekend to UC Riverside. Coughlin and Mason each sparked the offense with 11 kills each, while Jacqueline Lux dished out 31 assists.
Much like the first match of the day, the Raiders struck first against the Highlanders.
MT forced eight Highlander errors and limited UC Riverside to a -.029 hitting percentage for a 25-19 opening-set win.
The Highlanders would rally, however, and forced eight errors of their own for a 25-17 win in the second set to even the match.
Following the intermission, MT and UCR split the first eight points to open the third. Knotted at 8-8, the Highlanders used a 6-0 run to take the lead and claimed the third set by a score of 25-18.
UCR opened the final set on a roll offensively, until the Raiders rallied to tie the set at 13. Riverside scored the next three points and used that run to claim a 25-21 win and set the 3-1 match final.
The Blue Raiders return to the court Friday for their home-opener in Alumni Memorial Gym. MT welcomes Illinois State, Seton Hall and Tennessee Tech to Murfreesboro for the annual Blue Raider Bash.
