MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Blue Raider senior Reggie Upshaw earned Conference USA Player of the Week honors for his 34 point, nine rebound outing against UAB, as announced by the league office Monday.
The career outing became a weekly award sweep as he also earned College Sports Mandess C-USA Player of the Week and Tennessee Sports Writers Association PLayer of the Week honors.
The 34 points edged out his previous career high of 32 points while he also sank a career best four triples in the outing. The versatile forward was 11-of-16 from the field and 8-of-11 from the free throw line and added four steals and an assist against the Blazers.
"I think Reggie will admit that maybe his level of play against Georgia State wasn't what he expects of himself," head coach Kermit Davis said. "I thought he had a really good week of practice, was determined, and rebounded the ball well. He put us on his back against UAB and is very deserving."
Upshaw also displayed his defensive excellence against a talented UAB frontcourt, leading a defensive effort that held the Blazers under 50 points for the first time since Nov. 2014.
The Chattanooga native surpassed the 1,250 career point and 750 career rebound plateaus in the contest, becoming the fourth player in Blue Raider history and just the 13th in Conference USA history to reach both marks in their career.
"Reggie has had a heck of a career," Davis added. "He was a freshman when we came into Conference USA and if you go back through the history of this conference there have been so many good players. If you start adding his assists and steals in as well, there are not a lot of guys that can do what he has done in several different categories."
Upshaw is averaging 15.4 points and 6.6 rebounds on the season and leads the Raiders in assists (45) and blocks (13) on the season while adding 23 steals.
The Conference USA Player of the Week award is a first for Upshaw while his TSWA honor is the second of his career.
Middle Tennessee returns to action on Thursday in a 7:00 p.m. tip at Rice.
