MT Falls in Four Sets to UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team fell in four sets (14-25, 20-25, 25-19, 18-25) to the UAB Blazers on Sunday evening in the Bartow Arena.
Notable
Junior Makila York (13) and sophomore Dora Peonia (10) paced the Blue Raider offense posting a combined 23 kills.
Similarly, junior Bailey Mason picked up eight kills while adding six digs and five service aces over the Blazers.
Also recording kills for Middle Tennessee included redshirt-sophomore Alyssa Mathis and freshman Josie Maxim who inked three kills apiece.
From the backrow, sophomore libero Brienna Tankesley (6) and senior Sloan Sullivan (5) posted a combined 11 digs in the match.
Freshman Maddie Sweeney made her second appearance on the court as the Middle Tennessee setter to record a career-high 34 assists while adding five digs and four kills.
Set by Set
In the first frame, the Blue Raiders opened with a 10-6 lead over the Blazers with kills from Mathis, Mason, Peonia, and Sweeney. However, UAB battled back hitting on a .471 clip to clinch the first set, 25-14.
York opened the second set with a kill over the Blazers to lead, 1-0. The Blazers offense did not settle, taking a 15-9 lead over the Blue Raiders. However, Middle Tennessee battled back to tie the score at 17-all with a service ace from Tankesley. The Blue Raiders remained close in the set before UAB posted a 3-0 run to clinch the second set, 25-20.
In the third set, it was an even match with eight lead changes in the frame. MT grabbed the 18-16 lead over the Blazers after York recorded her first ace of the season. UAB battled back within three but could not get any closer as Middle Tennessee clinched the third, 25-19.
In the fourth and final set, the Blazers jumped out to 17-9 lead over Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders fought hard to bring the score within five (21-16) but fell in the fourth to drop the match, 3-1.
