Blue Raider Walk-Off Produces Comeback for the Ages
4/13/2017 10:41:00 PM | Baseball
MT trailed by as many as eight runs in the game
Lazarus from the dead and the phoenix from the ashes have long served as historical models for life rising to defy death.
The Blue Raiders produced a similar ascension against the Blazers because the unlikely 11-10 comeback win not only captivated what remained of a unbelieving Reese Smith Jr. Field gathering, it also proved to be a short in the arm for a team that refused to give in after trailing by eight runs after 3-1/2 innings.
Trailing 9-1, Middle Tennessee players showed their moxie and produced the type of comeback that can define seasons and turn them around.
Drew Huff's single up the middle scored Austin Dennis from second base to complete an eight-run comeback that propelled the Blue Raiders (17-17, 5-8 C-USA) to the opening game of the series and moved them into a tie in the standings with the visiting Blazers (16-18, 5-8).
Dennis, who singled to start the bottom of the ninth, led Middle Tennessee's 15-hit attack with a 3-for-5 effort that included one RBI and two runs scored. In fact, Dennis scored the tying run in the seventh and the winning run in the ninth.
Dennis was one of six Blue Raiders with multi-hit games. Aaron Aucker continued to blister opposing pitchers with a 2-for-4 effort that included two doubles and two runs scored. Riley Delgado (2-for-5, double, two RBI, one run), Brad Jarreau (2-for-5, run scored, RBI), Kaleb King (2-for-5, two runs) and Huff (2-for-4, three RBI, one run scored) all had multi-hit games as Middle Tennessee won its third straight and seventh game in 10 outings.
Although the Blazers put up 10 runs, there were still dynamic pitching performances.
Such as that of junior lefty Tyler McDivitt. The southpaw was superb in his relief stint. McDivitt came aboard with the Blue Raiders trailing 9-1. He kept the Blazers off-balance and provided four innings of three-hit relief. McDivitt faced 15 batters, threw first-pitch strikes to 14 of them and did not walk a batter. He posted three shutout innings before surrendering his second hit and giving way to Tyler Holcombe.
McDivitt's efforts kept UAB at bay and gave his team a chance to rally.
Holcombe (3-1) was also electric on this evening. The sophomore relief specialist pitched 2-2/3 innings of no-hit baseball to earn the win. He struck out two and walked one.
"What a great comeback for our team," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "I can't tell you how proud I am of every young man who put on the uniform. Whether they played or not everyone was up in the dugout, in the bullpen. You just felt like something special was happening. These guys just kept fighting and believing. (McDivitt and Holcombe) gave us some great innings in relief and there were several clutch at-bats up and down the order."
UAB put up four runs in the second and five more in the third. It was looking like a long night, but McDivitt and Holcombe combined to allow just three hits and one run in the final six frames. Meanwhile, Middle Tennessee scored four in the fourth, five in the seventh and capped it with a run in the bottom of the ninth.
Dennis started the inning with a single. King dropped a perfect sacrifice and beat it out for a hit to put runners at first and second for Huff, who delivered the game winner in the clutch.
Middle Tennessee will look to win the series when it faces UAB in the second game of the series Friday at 6 p.m.
