Upset bid falls short at C-USA Championship

Blue Raiders win at No. 3, 4 and 6
DENTON, Texas – Middle Tennessee women's tennis was within reach of pulling off a first round upset over five-seed North Texas at the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship, but the tournament hosts earned a 4-3 win.
After Lidia Burrows and Costanza Magazzini won their match at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, North Texas won matches at No. 1 and 3 to clinch the first point in the match.
The Mean Green then jumped out to a 2-0 lead by winning, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot in the lineup thanks to reigning C-USA Player of the Week Tamuna Kutubidze.
Sarah Sediri put the Blue Raiders on the board with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the bottom of the lineup, followed by Luis Zirilli's three-set triumph at No. 4 to knot the match at 2-2.
North Texas then took a 3-2 lead in the match as No. 76 Maria Kononova bounced back from dropping her first set to earn a three-set win at the top spot in the lineup. The three-time C-USA Player of the Week won the final set by a score of 6-1.
Burrows recovered from dropping her first set, 1-6, to win in the second and third sets to get the win at No. 3 and tie the match at 3-3. The Mean Green then clinched the win over MT in a third set tiebreak to advance to play the winner of four-seed Old Dominion and 13-seed UAB in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
