MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee's AJ Spencer and Old Dominion's Adam Bainbridge entered into a strong pitcher's duel but neither was around for the decision on a sun-splashed day at Reese Smith Jr. Field Saturday.
Old Dominion rallied for two runs in the 12th inning to secure a 5-3 win and take the series.
Spencer was solid in his six innings of work. He scattered four hits and allowed three runs, two earned. Spencer struck out a career-high six in the no-decision. Bainbridge also settled for a no-decision despite taking a 3-1 lead into the eighth. The lefty allowed three runs, none earned, in 7-1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked none.
Both bullpens were strong once again. Will Small allowed one hit and no runs in two solid innings to give the Blue Raiders an opportunity. Drew Huff was also solid, allowing just one hit in three innings of scoreless relief. Tyler Holcombe (2-2) was saddled with the loss after giving up a two-run home run in the top of the 12th.
Old Dominion relief pitcher Craig Lopez (2-1) earned the win for the second straight game with 4-2/3 innings of two-hit shutout baseball.
Kaleb King led Middle Tennessee's 10-hit attack with a 3-for-6 effort that included one RBI. Ryan kemp (2-for-5, double, one run) and Aaron Aucker (2-for-4, two runs scored) also had multi-hit games for the Blue Raiders (14-17, 3-8).
Old Dominion (24-8, 9-2) struck first for the second straight game in the series when Vinnie Pasquantino lifted a two-out double to right center, scoring Jared Young for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
With Spencer and Monarch lefty Adam Bainbridge engaged in a pitcher's duel, the score remained 1-0 until the fifth when Old Dominion added two more runs to go on top 3-0.
Middle Tennessee finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth when Aucker scored on a Huff groundout to narrow the deficit to 3-1, and the Blue Raiders came off the deck in grand fashion to tie the score, 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth.
Aucker reached on an error to start the inning. Kemp followed with a single to right center, and King came through with a base knock to left field, scoring Aucker and cutting the Old Dominion lead to 3-2. Following a Huff bunt, Blake Benefield lifted a fly ball to center that was deep enough to score Kemp and tie the game, 3-3.
The competitive battle lasted until the 12th inning when Old Dominion finally broke through for two runs off Holcombe to secure the 5-3 win.
Middle Tennessee will try to salvage the final game of the series Sunday. First pitch is noon.
