Tennessee transfer looking to make an impact
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee women's tennis head coach Charlie Ramsay made official last week the signing of Tennessee transfer and rising junior Kim Kermet from West Palm Beach, Florida.
"Kim has a big game and will come in and help us immediately. She has a great serve, and she is working hard to turn her forehand into a big-time weapon," Ramsay said of the newest Blue Raider. "Her experience competing in the SEC will be a huge asset. That's the toughest league in the country and she gained tremendous experience from that."
Kermet owned a career record of 25-29 in singles action to go with a doubles record of 26-26 in two seasons in Knoxville under former MT coach Alison Ojeda. After playing the majority of her career's matches in her freshman year, Kermet competed in 17 singles matches and 20 doubles matches in the 2016-17 season.
"MT had everything I was looking for in a program," Kermet said of Ramsay's program. "I love that they are aiming high and wanting to achieve big things, and I really wanted to jump on board and be a part of what MT will do in these upcoming years."
In her first fall at Tennessee, Kermet claimed the singles consolation title of the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic while taking down ETSU's Marina Espana to close out the event with four consecutive wins. She played mostly in the middle of the lineup in her first dual match season with the Vols.
Kermet's sophomore season at Tennessee started with three consecutive wins at the Furman Fall Classic, winning over opponents from Mississippi State, Florida State and Clemson. She also had a streak of three straight doubles wins with partner Ashley Bongart in the fall season. The MT transfer finished out her final season in Knoxville with a 4-4 mark in dual matches, including two wins at No. 3.
Although she started competing in professional tournaments at 14 years old, Kermet would like to pursue a career in teaching English after her playing days are over.
"I've competed on a high level all my life, from playing pro tennis to playing in the SEC for the University of Tennessee," Kermet said. "I'm really used to competing on a very tough level and I also know what it takes to win and be a high-level team."
"Kim is such a nice young lady, and she'll gel nicely with the very close group we have coming back from last year," Ramsay added. "We're thrilled that Kim has chosen MTSU, and we look forward to helping her develop both on and off the court."
