MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Lady Raider guard Anna Jones has been named the C-USA Freshman of the Week following one of the most prolific scoring performances ever by a Middle Tennessee rookie.
North Texas standout Terriell Bradley was the C-USA Player of the Week, and WKU's Ivy Brown earned honor roll accolades. Awards are chosen by a vote from the league's communication directors.
Jones averaged 20.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks, while shooting 56 percent from the field in back-to-back Middle Tennessee road wins at UTSA and UTEP.
"I appreciate the people who considered me worthy of receiving this award," Jones said. "It felt good to help the team win two important games in the conference. My teammates got me the ball when I was open, and I was able to hit those open shots."
After tying her career high for points (11) and 3-point field goals (2) at UTSA last Thursday, Jones put together a masterful performance that was one of the best in school history by a freshman to help pace the Lady Raiders to a 54-45 win at UTEP.
Jones poured in 30 points, which are the most by a Lady Raider this season, and drained eight 3-pointers to lead the win. Jones' 30 points represented 56 percent of the team's scoring and were the most by a Middle Tennessee freshman since Jamie Thomatis netted 37 against Tennessee State, Feb. 23, 1999. The eight 3-pointers tied for the third most by a Lady Raider in a single-game all-time.
"Anna had a great game, a great road trip really, but you want to know what impressed me most about her after that UTEP game?," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell questioned. "It was the humility Anna showed. She wasn't all about her points or how many shots she hit. It was more about helping the team win a big game on the road. That's what impressed me, and let me tell you, Anna Jones knocked down some big-time shots in that game."
With the Lady Raiders clinging to a 20-19 halftime lead at UTEP, Jones poured in 22 of her 30 in the second half, including 4-of-5 in the third quarter when she made four consecutive field goals of which three were 3-pointers.
Middle Tennessee led 23-22 when Jones began her third-quarter scoring binge, which started with a layup to push the lead to 25-22 with 6:49 remaining in the frame. Following a Jordan Majors free throw, Jones hit the first of three straight 3-pointers following UTEP misses. The third trey came at the 3:04 mark and proved to be the dagger as it provided the Lady Raiders with their largest lead of the game, 35-22.
It also capped 3:45 stretch in which Jones scored 11 points and went 4-of-4 from the field. She was efficient from the field throughout, knocking down 8-of-13 3-pointers and 10-of-17 field goals overall against UTEP. Jones was 4-of-8, including 2-of-5 from beyond the arc, against UTSA.
Middle Tennessee returns to action when it plays host to North Texas Thursday.
