JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – On the first road trip of the season, Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season to North Florida but blanked Florida A&M in the second match of the doubleheader.
The Ospreys struck first on their home courts with wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles over the Blue Raiders. Kim Kermet and Luisa Zirilli won their match at No. 1, 6-4, but North Florida won by a score of 7-5 on the other courts.
In singles action, Zirilli and Kermet won their matches to make it 2-1, in favor of the Blue Raiders. North Florida took back the lead and kept it with wins at No. 1, 2 and 4. The Ospreys won on court two in three sets. Marta Peris Herrero was two games away from giving MT its third point of the match.
"We give North Florida a lot of credit. They fought hard and were tougher than us in some spots," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "Kim and Luisa did a great job getting quick wins and putting us on the board. We didn't play particularly well in doubles, and that was the difference. We'll learn from it and be better next weekend."
To wrap up the doubleheader, the Blue Raiders got back to their winning ways over Florida A&M, 5-0. Due to weather, the contest began with singles, so no doubles matches were played. Costanza Magazzini, Lidia Burrows, Zani Barnard, Kermet and Zirilli all won their singles matches in straight sets to complete the sweep.
MT will be back at the Adams Tennis Complex for two matches this weekend, hosting Louisville (Feb. 2 at 4 p.m.) and Tulsa (Feb. 4 at noon).
