The Middle Tennessee volleyball team welcomes the UAB Blazers and the UTEP Miners to the Alumni Memorial Gym this weekend. The team will open the weekend against the Blazers on Friday evening before rounding off the weekend, facing the Miners on Sunday at noon.
Scouting UAB (11-10, 3-4)
The Blazers opened their season at the Cowtown Classic, earning its first loss of the season to TCU. However, the team bounced back at their season opening tournament, picking up its first two wins over Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville and the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay. UAB would continue on to ink six more victories in its preseason action, before opening conference play. So far this season, the Blazers have notched three conference wins, including victories over Marshall, UTEP and Conference USA's pre-season favorite, WKU.
UAB's attack is paced by Abby Carlile, who has appeared in 70 sets, claiming 213 kills on the season. Carlile averages 3.04 digs per set while hitting on a .271 clip. Meanwhile, Brianna Muller (201) and Emily Martinez (191) control the Blazer backrow, inking a combined 392 digs.
Scouting UTEP (3-16, 0-7)
UTEP opened its 2018 season with a four-set victory over Incarnate Word at the Tulane Volleyball I-10 Challenge. Since the team's first victory, the Miners have collected two more wins on the season in non-conference play.
Macey Austin paves the way for the Miners offense, recording 273 kills this season. Austin averages 3.69 kills per set while hitting on a .174 clip. Similarly, Briana Bustillos controls the UTEP backrow, recording 276 digs while averaging 3.73 digs per set.
Four Blue Raiders Rank Among Conference Best
Four Blue Raiders rank among the top-20 in individual statistics amongst Conference USA opponents. Senior Bailey Mason
leads the team, representing Middle Tennessee in three of the six statistical categories. Mason is represents Middle Tennessee in the following categories: kills per set (15th, 2.92), service aces per set (T-8th, 0.29) and in points pet set (16th, 3.42). Similarly, junior Brienna Tankesley
ranks seventh in the conference in digs per set (3.84). Meanwhile, from their setter positions, junior Taylor Hammill
(7.55) and freshman Sarah Sumida
(6.05) rank 12th and 13th in assists per set.
Coughlin Surpasses 500-Dig Milestone
Senior outside hitter, Regan Coughlin
eclipsed the 500-dig milestone in the three-set match versus Charlotte last weekend. The Bloomington, Ill. product contributed 10 digs in the match against the 49ers last Friday, Oct. 12 to collect a perfect 500 at the conclusion of the match.
The Blue Raiders take a break from conference action for a midweek contest against UT Martin on Wednesday, Oct. 24 before resuming C-USA play on Saturday, Oct. 28, traveling to Birmingham, Ala. to compete against UAB for the second time this season.
