Â
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Faced with its latest out-of-conference game since the 2006 season, Middle Tennessee went on the road Saturday to No. 17 Kentucky and fell 34-23.
Â
After the loss, the Blue Raiders (7-4, 6-1 Conference USA) will have a regular season-finale matchup with C-USA West Division champion UAB. The Wildcats (8-3, 5-3 Southeastern Conference) will finish with in-state rival Louisville.
Â
It was the third time MT took on an SEC East Division opponent on the road this season, and it had an overall solid performance except for a couple of detrimental plays.
Â
The Blue Raiders were successful moving the football, winning the total yards battle 392-324, but an interception returned for a touchdown and a lost fumble on their first two drives led to 14 quick UK points. Middle Tennessee couldn't recover.
Â
Kentucky built as much as a 21-point lead in the third quarter before the Blue Raiders made a charge, using two Brent Stockstill passing touchdowns to cut the deficit to 31-23 with 13:18 left in the game.
Â
Middle Tennessee then had a chance at a game-tying drive after UK failed on fourth down with 11:34 left, but after four plays it gained just 2 yards, giving the ball back to the Wildcats.
Â
The home team capitalized with a field goal, pushing the lead back to 11 points at 34-23 with four minutes left.
Â
A final Blue Raider drive made it all the way to the UK 5-yard line before redshirt senior quarterback Brent Stockstill was sacked twice in a row to end the game, giving Kentucky seven sacks on the day.
Â
Stockstill completed 30-of-33 passes for 293 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. His second scoring toss gave him 100 for his career, the first Middle Tennessee player to reach the feat and just 25th in NCAA history. He's now tied for 24th all-time in the NCAA with 101 TD passes and has 24 this season to go against just five interceptions.
Â
Redshirt freshman Chaton Mobley finished with 19 carries for 98 yards and caught five passes for 62 yards and a TD, while junior Ty Lee led the way in the receiving department with seven catches for 85 yards and a score, his fifth game in a row finding the end zone.
Â
Defensively for the Blue Raiders, Wesley Bush had 12 tackles to lead the way, while Reed Blakenship had 10 tackles and Khalil Brooks came up with a sack.
Â
Middle Tennessee's regular season will end on Nov. 24 with a 2 p.m. kickoff against UAB at Floyd Stadium. It will be the Blue Raiders' senior day, and a win could send them to the Conference USA Championship Game against the Blazers.
Â
The Raiders will need a win against UAB and a loss from FIU in one of its final two games – or two losses for FIU – to get to the title game.
