Blue Raiders Edged by FIU, 3-0

MIAMI, Fla. – The Middle Tennessee Volleyball team (7-20, 2-11) dropped its road contest to FIU (16-11, 8-5) in the Ocean Bank Convocation Center in straight-sets (25-12, 25-18, 25-10) on Thursday evening.
Senior Bailey Mason led the teams offense in the match, inking nine kills. Likewise, fellow senior Regan Coughlin added five kills in the contest while redshirt-senior Vonnie Covington added three.
From her back row position, junior Brienna Tankesley notched 18 digs in the contest, averaging 6.00 digs per set. Similarly, Coughlin (7) and freshman Sarah Sumida (5) added a combined 12 digs in the contest for the Blue Raiders.
In the first frame, redshirt-sophomore Aubrie Huddleston recorded the first kill of the contest to give the Blue Raiders a point advantage over the Panthers. However, the Panthers responded with four straight points before the Blue Raiders got back on track with a kill from Coughlin (4-2). FIU created another small run before Middle Tennessee posts a block by junior Dora Peonia and Mason to spark a 3-0 Blue Raider run (7-5). The Blue Raiders battled within two (10-12) but were unable to get any closer as FIU claimed the set, 25-12.
Coughlin recorded the first Blue Raider kill in the second set (1-1) before fellow senior Mason laid down her first kill of the contest off of the Panther block to tie the frame for the second time of the set (2-2). However, the Panthers created a 10-3 run (12-5) over the Blue Raiders before freshman Julia Valdez stopped the run with a kill from her middle blocker position (12-6). The team created a late 3-0 run (13-10) to come within three of the Panthers but were unable to secure the set as the Panthers take the set, 25-18.
In the third and final set, the Blue Raiders were unable to get in a rhythm falling to FIU, 25-10 for the Panthers to take the match in straight sets.
The Blue Raiders will compete in their final match of the regular season at Florida on Sunday. Nov. 11 with a noon start.
