First honor in C-USA
DALLAS – For a program-record third time, Middle Tennessee head coach Rick Stockstill has been named conference Coach of the Year.
Conference USA announced the award, as voted on by the league's 14 head football coaches, on Wednesday. It's the first time the 13-year Blue Raider football coach has won Coach of the Year in C-USA after winning it twice in the Sun Belt Conference (2006 and co-COY in 2009).
Stockstill has led MT to an 8-5 record this season with a bowl game left against Appalachian State. The Blue Raiders also played in the C-USA Championship game for the first time.
Middle Tennessee was picked by conference media members in the preseason to finish third in the East Division, but it defied those odds with a 7-1 league record and first division title.
On their way to winning the East, the Blue Raiders took down Florida Atlantic and Marshall in back-to-back weeks to start C-USA play, the two teams voted higher than MT in the preseason. They also rattled off five league wins in a row before falling in the C-USA Championship.
This year's eight wins qualified Middle Tennessee for a school-record fourth straight bowl game appearance. Under Stockstill, it's been bowl eligible 10 times in 13 seasons.
The Blue Raiders will take on Appalachian State in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on Dec. 15 at the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.
