Raiders fall in game two of series against WVU

Aucker hits 4th HR of season
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After winning four of their last five games, Middle Tennessee lost to Big XII opponent West Virginia 8-4 in game two of their series in Reese Smith Jr. Field.
While MT had also compiled double digit hits in four of the last five games – all wins, the Blue Raiders only logged six hits as a team in Saturday's loss. Only two batters registered multiple hits on the day, led by Aaron Aucker who went 2-for-3 with a home run, double and three RBI.
"We just couldn't get anything going offensively like we want to," said head coach Jim McGuire. "We moved some guys around (in the lineup) . . . we just weren't in sync at all though."
It was Aucker that powered the late rally for the Blue Raiders, blasting his three-run home run in the eighth inning after a Kevin Sullivan walk and a Ryan Kemp single. However, MT could not sequence together enough base runners to close the gap.
Kemp finished the day 3-for-5 with a run scored and a run batted in.
Junior right-hander Carson Lester got the nod on the mound for the Blue Raiders. Lester held strong for the first four innings, only giving up three hits and two earned runs; but WVU piled on five runs in the fifth frame to put things out of reach.
Lester was relieved by Tyler Holcombe and Scheldon Paulk. Holcombe alone went 3-2/3 innings, while only giving up two hits and one earned run. Paulk's appearance was his first of the season, the JUCO right-hander threw the ninth without allowing a walk or hit and striking out one.
"I though (Scheldon) did fine, I thought he settled in after the first batter," McGuire added. "The bullpen will be very critical for us going forward."
Middle Tennessee threatened again in the bottom of the ninth, after Austin Dennis scored off a Ryan Kemp single, but West Virginia's closer thwarted the effort.
The game took a strange turn in the bottom of the fourth inning when West Virginia starting pitcher Alek Manoah was ejected for throwing near an umpire and Ryan Kemp after Kemp was granted time at the plate, despite a strong appeal from the Mountaineers manager Randy Mazey and Manoah being in the midst of a no-hitter.
The Blue Raiders have a chance to seize control of the series in tomorrow's rubber match against the Mountaineers with freshman LHP Peyton Wigginton penciled in as the starter on the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in Reese Smith Jr. Field and fans can tune in via WGNS on 100.5/101.9 FM.
