Play begins Sunday
TEXARKANA, AR – The Middle Tennessee men's golf team heads to the postseason as the Conference USA Championship gets underway on Sunday at the Texarkana Country Club. The course is a par 72 with a length of 6,935 yards and puts a premium on tee to green play.
The Blue Raiders enter the tournament as the league's No. 2 seed with a national ranking of 73.
The 13-team tournament will have three 18-hole rounds of stroke play beginning Sunday. Following the results of stroke play, the top four teams will advance to a seeded match play round to be held Wednesday.
The team champion after match play will earn C-USA's automatic berth into the NCAA Regional.
"It's always exciting this time of year as we get into conference and NCAA tournaments where they hand out rings instead of trophies," said Head Coach Brennan Webb. "We have plenty of reason to be optimistic despite not having played or coached our best recently.
"We have three of the best players in the entire conference with Tyler (Johnson), Marcus (Byrd) and Chip (Thomas) all ranked inside the top 250 in the country. James (Beckner) played well last week at Vanderbilt, particularly the last round in some terrible conditions so I know he is feeling as good about his game as he has in a while. Adding Hoyeong (Kim) to the lineup for the first time this year gives us a guy who has a wealth of postseason experience. This will be his fourth conference championship at Texarkana CC, and he competed in the NCAA Championship last year as well.
"I look for us to play with a lot more freedom than we have recently and fully expect us to be right where we need to be at the end of the tournament."
The Blue Raiders will have a practice round on Saturday followed by the championship banquet that night. First round action will get underway Sunday morning.
The Blue Raider lineup this weekend will include redshirt freshman Tyler Johnson, junior Marcus Byrd, sophomore Chip Thomas, junior James Beckner and senior Hoyeong Kim.
Byrd, Thomas and Kim played in last year's championship at the Texarkana CC. Byrd and Thomas tied for 17th at 7-over par while Kim tied for 32nd at 13-over par.
