Blue Raiders sink 'Dores in weather-shortened bout

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee won a weather-shortened affair over the fifteenth-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores by a score of 4-3.
In the top of the eighth, Vanderbilt's Alonzo Jones hit a grand slam on a full count pitch with two men out in the top, propelling Vanderbilt to a 7-4 lead, just prior to a lightning delay.
However, because of the delay, MT was unable to hit in the bottom of the frame, reverting the score back to the previous frame and marking the official ending of the game.
The win snapped a three-game skid against the Commodores and marked the first win over the in-state foe since 2016.
"We'll take a win anyway we can get it," said head coach Jim McGuire. "I just hate the way the game ended, but I'm proud of our guys for the way they competed."
Middle Tennessee jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning via a Blake Benefield single, but Vanderbilt responded by scoring three runs in the fourth courtesy of a three-run home run.
An inning later, senior first-baseman Aaron Aucker lined a two-run home run over the fence in left to knot it up 3-3.
The Knoxville native finished the night 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
In the bottom of the sixth, Kevin Sullivan doubled to left-center, bringing Drew Huff around to score and give MTSU a 4-3 lead.
Blake Benefield notched a pair of hits in four plate appearances, launching his batting average to .296 heading into the weekend.
The reigning Conference USA hitter-of-the-week Drew Huff extended his hitting streak to nine games tonight, going 1-for-4 with a run scored. The Riverdale alum is enjoying a triple-slash line of .271/.317/.340 this season.
On the mound, MTSU starter Grant Williams had a shortened day, throwing 2-1/3 innings, allowing no runs on only two hits against nine batters faced.
Blake Stansberry came on in relief and kept the 'Dores off the scoreboard in the second.
Right-hander Tyler Holcombe fired 2.2 innings of no-run, no-hit ball. The redshirt-junior racked up four strikeouts as well.
Middle Tennessee will host conference foe Marshall for a three-game weekend set at Reese Smith Field Jr. this weekend. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
