MURFREESBORO, Tenn.– Middle Tennessee improved to 3-0 as a nationally ranked team this season with wins over VCU and William & Mary at the Adams Tennis Complex this weekend.
The Blue Raiders (19-4) opened up the weekend with a 4-3 victory over VCU on Saturday. Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore and Miguel Negre Fernandez cruised to a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles, but the Rams won by a score of 6-4 at No. 1 and 3 to take the first point in the match.
In singles play, Gian Issa tied the match at one point apiece with a 6-2, 6-0 dominant performance at No. 5, but the Rams won in straight sets at No. 2 to take the lead back. Wins by Negre and Luis Morillo Diaz in straight sets gave MT their first lead of the day, and the remaining matches went to third sets. After VCU won at No. 1, Chris Edge clinched the MT win with a 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 score on court three.
On Sunday against William & Mary, the Blue Raiders won the first point in the match with victories on courts one and two. Morell and Negre got the match started at No. 2 with a 6-3 score, and Tom Moonen paired with Edge at No. 1 for a dramatic win in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-2).
The Tribe struck first in doubles with a straight-set win at No. 3, but three Blue Raiders pulled through to clinch MT's win. Moonen cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 score at the top of the lineup, and Issa moved into sole possession of seventh in program history in career singles wins by claiming his match on court five. Morell clinched the win with a score of 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) on court two, and Edge followed with a three-set win to round out MT's 5-2 victory.
Two matches remain in the regular season, including one more match at the ATC. The Blue Raiders will be at ETSU on Wednesday before returning to Murfreesboro to face Georgia State on Saturday for senior day. MT is one win away from the most wins in a season under head coach Jimmy Borendame, and Issa is one singles win away from being tied for sixth all-time.
