RUSTON, La. – Middle Tennessee secured a huge road win against Louisiana Tech, claiming a 6-4 triumph against a Bulldogs' team receiving Top 25 votes and contending for the C-USA regular-season crown.
The win strengthened the Blue Raiders' chances of earning one of the eight berths for the C-USA Championships in Biloxi, Miss., later this month.
Middle Tennessee (23-22-1, 8-13-1) earned the victory with a combination of strong starting pitching supplied by senior southpaw Jake Wyrick, combined with the strong relief efforts of Tyler Holcombe and Drew Huff. They combined to limit the Bulldogs (31-16, 15-7) to eight hits. More impressively, the numbers 2-through-5 hitters in the Bulldogs' lineup were 2-for-13 against the Middle Tennessee hurlers.
Wyrick (3-3) provided 5-2/3 innings of strong starting pitching, scattering four hits and getting six strikeouts. Holcombe followed with 2-1/3 innings of one-hit, shutout baseball to hold the lead, before Huff came on to earn his fifth save of the season.
Middle Tennessee hitters collected 10 hits, led by multi-hit efforts from Darien Prewett, who was 3-for-3 with one run scored; and Aaron Aucker and Ryan Kemp, who combined for four hits and five RBI. Aucker, a preseason All-American, was 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Kemp was 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.
Aucker's team-leading 10th home run of the season highlighted a four-run third-inning that catapulted the Blue Raiders to the all-important, series-opening win. Aucker added to his C-USA leading RBI lead and now has 52.
LA Woodard (1-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 run), Austin Dennis (1-for-3, 2 runs), and Huff (1-for-3) also factored in the offense.
Woodard's sac fly scored Prewett, who had singled to start the inning. After Dennis walked, Kemp extended his hitting streak to 12 with a one-out single before Aucker delivered a home run to stake the Blue Raiders to the early 4-0 lead.
Middle Tennessee held that advantage before the Bulldogs broke through for three runs in the sixth to pull to within one.
Middle Tennessee flexed its muscles and showed it's moxie by coming right back with two in the top of the seventh. Woodard reached on a one-out single and Dennis followed with a walk to set the stage for Kemp, who doubled in both runners to push the lead to 6-3.
Louisiana Tech added a run in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run at second but Huff was true to the challenge and earned the save.
Middle Tennessee will look to earn the series road when as Grant Williams goes to the mound Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
