FORT WALTON BEACH, FL -- The Wuerffel Trophy announced its watch list today of a record XXX players from college football's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and Middle Tennessee's Brent Stockstill is on the distinguished list.
Stockstill, a redshirt senior, enters his final season ranked first nationally among active NCAA players in passing yards per game (288.7), second in total offense (9,265), third in passing yards (8,951) and eighth in passing efficiency. He also owns MT career records in passing yards (8,951), touchdown passes (77), 300-yard passing games (14), 400-yard passing games (2), passing yards per game (288.7) and completions (729).
Stockstill missed six games last season due to an injury but came back to lead the Blue Raiders to a win over favored Arkansas State in the Camellia Bowl.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented annually by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach Florida. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Stockstill, who earned his degree in just three years, also has his master's degree before even kicking off his senior campaign. The Murfreesboro native, who was named to the 22-member All-AFCA Good Works Team last year, is heavily involved in community outreach. Stockstill regularly reads to area school children, assists in special Olympics, does summer mentoring and helps at Camp Ability to name a few.
Voting for the Wuerffel Trophy is performed by a National Selection Committee that includes college football television and print media, industry notables, former head coaches and prior Wuerffel Trophy recipients.
