Fall camp position breakdown: Quarterbacks
8/5/2018 8:00:00 AM | Football
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – As Middle Tennessee enters fall camp to prep for the 2018 season, it does so with its starting quarterback spot locked down by the same name it's been for four years now.
Redshirt senior Brent Stockstill enters his final fall camp as maybe the greatest Blue Raider QB ever, already owning most of the program's passing records. He's on the Maxwell Award, Davey O'Brien Award and Wuerffel Award Watch Lists for the third time each.
While Stockstill is firmly planted as the team's starting signal caller and leader, behind him there's a battle brewing for the lead backup position.
Chase Cunningham was given the nod after spring practice, but he'll be pushed by talented freshmen Chance Nolan and Luke Shiflett and the spring's Most Improved Quarterback Award winner Davis Witt.
Here's a little more on each QB:
Starter
Brent Stockstill, R-Sr., 6-0, 215
Offensive coordinator Tony Franklin: "Brent's spring that he just had was better than any quarterback I've ever coached. He understands the offense, he's a great leader and he's a great football player. It's fun to have someone like him who can do so much physically and mentally … all the good quarterbacks I've had are coaches. They coach everybody on the field. That's what he does."
Notable:
Backups
Tony Franklin: "We don't have a backup right now, we have five. They'll be competing every day in every single thing they do. I'm really excited about the guys who went through the spring, and the new guys who're here on campus are all good football players.
"These kids can play, and if they have to play, they'll be ready to play. I think everyone will be excited when they get to see them play, and I'm excited to see who ends up being two."
