The Blue Raiders began their fall season this weekend in Philadelphia at the Penn Invitational. In the event, Middle Tennessee faced off against Princeton, Yale, Penn, Denver, and Columbia and finished with a combined 19-29 record between singles and doubles against several national powers.
Freshman Stijn Slump led the team in singles with a 2-1 singles record and wins over opponents from Penn and Princeton. MT debuted three freshmen, including Francisco Rocha who finished the weekend with a perfect 3-0 doubles record. Junior transfer Daniel Stormon and Senior Luis Morillo Diaz also went undefeated in doubles, as each won their matches when paired with Rocha and each other. Pavel Motl, also a freshman, finished the weekend 4-1 in doubles with two wins coming with Chris Edge, who was recently ranked nationally with Tom Moonen as a doubles pair.
Coach's Comments
"The goal was to get matches in and try some doubles combinations to see who had chemistry, and in the end, we accomplished those goals," said Head Coach Jimmy Borendame. "More importantly, we spent time as a team and identified areas to improve. We will get back to work this week amd make some improvements."
Looking Ahead
After a week off, the Blue Raiders will split their squad for their next events. Some players play in the Short/LaLance Shootout at the Adams Tennis Complex in Murfreesboro while others will travel to the ITA All-American in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
