NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore duo, Pavel Motl and Stijn Slump punched their ticket to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Newport Beach, California from November 6-10 after going 6-0 and topping Lipscomb's Pablo Caffarena and Victor Chaw in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional finals 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 on Monday at the Currey Tennis Center.
In route to their championship, the Raiders played in four tie breakers including a 6-7 (0), 6-3, 10-8 grinder of a match with the No. 30-ranked and 2-seed Oscar Cutting/David Stevenson of Memphis in the semifinals on Sunday.
Before this weekend, Motl/Slump had only played twice, both losses and most recently at last year's Virginia Tech Invite, the doubles lost 6-0 to Bantil/Talcott (W&M).
First time a Raiders doubles has advanced to the fall championship since All-Americans Marco Born and Andreas Siljestrom in 2006 where they lost in the final to 9-seed.
"Something just clicked the day before the regional," said Stijn Slump. "Then when we got to the tournament we understood how we played together. I am still in awe on how we got here, but I am so pumped to make the trip to California and see what we can do."
Chris Edge made it to the round of 16 with wins over Xavier and TSU but would fall to the 2 seed Rengifo (ETSU) in a three set thriller, 1-6, 7-6(4), 6-4).
No. 40-ranked Tom Moonen and Chris Edge fell in the round of 32 to Rengifo/Lugo (ETSU), 8-5.
