MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Success in the classroom has matched recent success on the softball field for Middle Tennessee, as 12 Blue Raiders were named Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes on Wednesday.
MT posted the second-most Scholar-Athletes in Conference USA — one shy of league-leader Louisiana Tech — and placed in the top 25% nationally in Division I.
2019 Blue Raiders who made the list include Kailey Ahlstrom, Summer Burgess, Kirstyn Cuccia, Lexi Cushing, Jocelynn De La Cruz, Corrina Dodd, Riley Fleming, Sydney Heath, Gracie Kirby, Brooke McClure, Keely McGee, and Cameran McKenry.
Burgess, Cuccia and McClure picked up their second such honor, while Cushing and McGee are now three-time recipients of All-America Scholar-Athlete recognition. Head Coach Jeff Breeden has now produced 61 Scholar-Athletes since his stint at MT began in 2013.
"These honors mean we're doing a good job of recruiting kids to come here to get their degree," Breeden said. "It says Madison [Lawrence] and Todd [Wyant] are doing a good job on the Academic Enhancement side also."
On the field in 2019, Burgess, Cuccia, Cushing, De La Cruz, and Heath all started at least 49 games for the Blue Raiders. Burgess is nearing the top in several of the program's career stat categories entering the 2020 season, and Cushing is already the school's all-time home runs leader.
"They know they've got to be good time managers," Breeden said of his student athletes. "We've got people in aerospace and people trying to be vets, to teachers, to everything in between. They're good time managers and overall good people."
