DePriest named C-USA Player of the Year
DALLAS, Texas – Ahead of the C-USA tournament, the Blue Raiders racked in several All-Conference USA accolades Tuesday as the conference office announced its superlative award winners and all-conference selections, which are voted on by the league's head coaches.
"I'm really happry for Peyton DePriest. She worked really hard to get back from her injury mid season ans has been stellar for the team since then," said head coach Aston Rhoden. "In a league with so many talented players it's truly special for her to win both the offensive player of the year and the player of the year."
Junior forward Peyton DePriest swept up three awards, being named as the C-USA Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year as well as earning a spot on the All-Conference First Team. This is second year in a row that DePriest has earned Offensive Player of the Year. The Franklin native, becomes the second Blue Raider to be named POTY in program history (last Debs Brereton in Sun Belt, 2004).
DePriest had a record-breaking season. She has scored a career-high 16 goals in 15 games putting her career total to 40 goals, shattering the program record of 38, yet she still has another season. She ranks first in conference only in points (24), goals (11), points per game (2.40), and goals per game (1.10). Not only she ranked in conference, she ranks 8th in division I in active career goals (one of two juniors in the top 25), T-6th in single-season goals, T-13th in points and 2nd in goals per game.
"Hannah has bee very consitent for us this season and a key figure in the way we play," said Rhoden. "I'm happy the coaches recognized her quality for the second consecutive year."
Sophomore Hannah Tillett was named to the All-Conference First Team. The sophomore lived up to the hype after she was voted to the preseason All-Conference list prior to the start of the season.
In her sophomore campaign, Tillett has controlled the MT midfield and been a crucial part of the Raider attack. She started every game and is second on team in goals (7). Tillett second on the squad in shots (44), shots on goal (21), points (21) and game winning goals (one). She also currently third in the conference in assists (7) and seventh in points (21).
"Kenzie is still growing as a player and improves with each game," said Rhoden. "The freshmen group in the league was veru strong this year, so I'm happy she was able to be selected."
Finally, freshman MacKenzie Bonham was selected onto the All-Freshman team with her five goals, three coming off a hat trick against UTEP. Her five goals rank her T-4th and T-5th in points (11) in conference only games. Bonham is the sixth Raider to land on the All-Freshman team.
DePriest, Tillett, Bonham and the rest of the Blue Raiders will face off in the opening round of the C-USA Conference Tournament tomorrow, Nov. 7 against No. 3 seed Rice at 4:30 p.m.
