MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee's track and field head coach Dean Hayes released the 2019-2020 schedule that includes nine indoor and eight outdoor meets to prepare them for post season competition.
The Blue Raider men are looking to capture their third Conference USA Indoor Track and Field title in four years after claiming the gold last season, making it MT's third straight year with a championship winning indoor team after the women claimed the title in 2018. The women look to bounce back this season after taking third in the 2019 C-USA Championships.
This season's schedule is similar to that of last year, with the addition of two indoor meets, the Jimmy Green Invitational and the Indiana Relays, hosted by nationally ranked Kentucky and Indiana.
"We did add University of Kentucky to the indoor schedule because we have not been there in a number of years," Hayes said. "We're also going back to Indiana, which we haven't been to in a long time, so they will get to see what the Big Ten is like. It's good for them to see other schools who do other things and have their own facilities. I like them to get around a little bit more."
In the 2019 outdoor season, the men's team finished second overall at the Conference USA Championships with 117 points, and the women's team finished fourth with 81 points. Seven individual Blue Raiders claimed championship titles as well.
The Blue Raiders return to Austin, Texas this outdoor season for the Texas Relays and will also compete in four meets hosted by SEC schools, such as Auburn, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
"For outdoors we're going back to the Texas Relays," Hayes said. "The NCAA is down there, so that's a good reason to go back. It's also a different atmosphere and I like them to see what other parts of the United States are like."
Several Blue Raiders are returning this season, including seniors Kigen Chemadi and Jacob Choge who had a very successful fall season with cross country, both ranked nationally. Willington Wright and Jaquez Torian are also returning after having successful post-season performances last season.
"On the men's side, distance runners will definitely be the key this season," Hayes said. "We have guys coming back who have been All-Americans, such as Kigen Chemadi and Jacob Choge, and we picked up some freshman who are very good."
The women had a successful fall with cross country as well after claiming the Conference USA title. Senior Eusila Chepkemei returns for the track and field season after being named the C-USA Women's Cross Country Individual Champion. Cecilia Francis is back as well after notching fourth place in the 100-meter event at the C-USA Championships last season.
"Again distance running will be very important. Eusila Chepkemei, Pamela Kosgei and Joice Jebor all ran really well this fall, so it'll be exciting."
