Lady Raiders drop OT thriller at UAB

Johnson's 28 points not enough for MT
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Two of Conference USA's top women's basketball teams provided fans a thriller as Middle Tennessee and UAB needed an extra period to determine the winner here Saturday.
UAB (22-5, 10-4) earned a split in the season series with a come-from-behind 77-72 overtime win against the Lady Raiders (19-8, 10-4).
The loss overshadowed a sterling performance from Alex Johnson, who poured in a season-high 28 points, five rebounds and two assists. The constant duress Johnson faced from UAB's interior defense couldn't slow the inside force.
Johnson was 8-of-14 from the field and 10-of-14 from the free-throw line and was a constant throughout but particularly in the second half.
A'Queen Hayes finished with 14 points and Anna Jones reached double figures with 10 points. She also had a team-high seven rebounds. Jordan Majors finished with nine points and six rebounds for the Lady Raiders.
Middle Tennessee stormed out to a 34-20 halftime advantage, but UAB came out of the locker room strong in the second half to get back into the game. The Blazers used a 24-11 third quarter to close the gap to 45-44 entering the fourth quarter.
Miyah Barnes, who led UAB with 19 points, six assists and no turnovers, made winning plays down the stretch for the Blazers. Barnes scored her team's final six points in regulation and forced overtime with two pressure free throws with 7.7 seconds remaining after Jones had given the Lady Raiders a 64-62 lead with a big 3-pointer with 53 seconds remaining.
Much like the second half, the extra five minutes was back and forth until UAB pushed the lead to five in the final minute.
The Lady Raiders will be back in action when they play host to Florida Atlantic on Senior Night Saturday at 5 p.m.
