Third consecutive Blue Raider to garner Newcomer honor
FRISCO, Texas – One day after being named to the All-Conference USA Third Team, Blue Raider guard Antonio Green has been voted as the league's Newcomer of the Year for the 2018-19 season.
The award, voted on by the league's coaches and media members, goes to the league's best transfer playing their first season in Conference USA.
"This award means so much and I'm thankful to the coaches and media members who think so highly of me," Green said. "I feel like it's a true testament to my hard work and everything I put into this game."
Green, who joined Middle Tennessee in the summer of 2017 after two stellar seasons at UTRGV, sat out the 2017-18 season before re-taking the floor last November as a Blue Raider.
The Tupelo native has taken Murphy Center by storm in his junior campaign, ranking fifth in Conference USA in points per game (18.3), second in 3-pointer field goals made (104) and second in free throw percentage (.871).
"Sitting out a year really pushed me to become better and I feel like I really learned a lot as a player about what it takes to win and be productive at a high level day in and day out," Green added.
Green's 104 3-pointers so far this season have shattered the previous record of 85 set by Giddy Potts just a season ago after previously standing for 30 years. He also became just the 15th different player in the history of Conference USA men's basketball to reach triple digit 3-point makes in a season when he knocked in his 100th of the campaign at UTEP on March 6.
The 6-foot-2 guard has scored in double figures in 29 of MT's 31 games this season, collecting 20 points on 16 different occasions and pouring in 30 points twice this season with 30 against Lipscomb (Dec. 1) and 31 at Marshall (Feb. 16).
Following in the footsteps of JaCorey Williams (2017) and Nick King (2018), Green gives the Blue Raiders three league Newcomer of the Year awards in the last three seasons.
"It means a lot to follow those two in winning this award, especially Nick since he is one of my closest friends," Green stated. "I know those two work on their games a lot and I'm just grateful to be able to make it three years in a row."
Green and his teammates tip off the Conference USA Championship on Wednesday when they face the UAB Blazers at 6:30 p.m. on Court B of The Ford Center at The Star.
