AUBURN, Ala. – Blue Raider senior Hanley Long looked primed to remain in the top tier of the leaderboard at the NCAA Auburn Regional on Tuesday until a late stumble saw her drop to 4-over par on the day and 6-over (74-76=150) for the tournament.
Long sat 1-over through 16 holes until a bogey on 17 followed by an errant tee shot on 18 led to a tough finish to the second day. However, Long will remain in the hunt for a spot to advance to the NCAA Championships with a good round tomorrow.
"It might take a pretty good number, but I know I'm still in it," Long said. "I just have to go out tomorrow and leave it all out on the course, and if I can go low I'll give myself a chance to keep playing."
The Clarksville, Tenn., native carded four birdies on the day, including her second in as many days on the Par 3 seventh hole. Her 1-under par (2.88) mark on the Par 3 holes is tied for fifth in the field of 96 golfers.
Long also started the day with a birdie on the Par 5 first hole and added another on the Par 5 15th to move to 2-under par (4.71) in Par 5 scoring, good for a share of the eighth best mark in the field.
"Hanley struggled a little bit more with her back today than she did yesterday, but she is a competitor and she is going to battle," Head Coach Chris Adams said. "She'll need a good round tomorrow to move back up the leaderboard, but she's talented enough and I wouldn't be surprised to see her make a run at it."
Long, tied for 46th, will tee off on the 10th hole Wednesday morning at 8:50 a.m. alongside Kentucky's Leonie Bettel (+10) and Chattanooga's Monica San Juan (+11).
