MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee men's tennis was recognized once again for its well-rounded 2018-19 success, as junior Tom Moonen has received the Air Force Reserve Spring Spirit of Service Award, Conference USA announced Thursday.
Outstanding community service, academic standing and athletic achievements all play a role in the student athletes chosen as recipients of the Spirit of Service Award. It is presented three times every year, with the spring honorees representing the following sports: baseball, men's and women's golf, softball, men's and women's outdoor track and men's and women's tennis.
Moonen, one of 14 honorees, was a key piece in the Blue Raiders' C-USA championship run in 2019. The Rotterdam, Netherlands, native ended the season ranked No. 71 nationally in doubles with partner Chris Edge. The pair earned a spot on the All-C-USA Second Team Doubles list after posting a dual match record of 15-6, all at the top doubles position.
In singles, Moonen was a staple in the middle of MT's lineup, posting a 12-11 record on court three. In the C-USA Championship at the Adams Tennis Complex, he delivered a clutch performance on court three to tie the match at 3-3 and set teammate Pavel Motl up to clinch the championship.
"It was a tough beginning of the season for the team and me," said Moonen. "It was our perseverance as a team along with the help of our crowd that won us the championship."
As a student, Moonen majors in accounting with a GPA of 3.93. He was named to the CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-District At-Large list as well as the C-USA All-Academic Team in recognition for his success in the classroom this year. He has also claimed three C-USA Academic Medals and has been named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll three times throughout his career.
"Tom's focus on his academics has been contagious," MT Head Coach Jimmy Borendame said. "He helped set the bar high, and the other guys have all seen the example he has set for the team.
"This upcoming year, we'll lean on his experience and leadership both on and off the court even more."
The Blue Raiders claimed the Ohio Valley Region's Community Service Award for the third consecutive year, and Moonen was one of many Blue Raiders to lead the charge. He and his teammates conducted free clinics for disadvantaged youth and partnered with local schools to teach tennis at no cost.
"Giving back to the community and doing well in the classroom are a big part of our beliefs as a team," Moonen added.
"We are lucky to have such an amazing tennis community, and I look forward to interacting with them again next season."
