MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A total of 18 student-athletes were announced today as Conference USA's Scholar Athletes of the Year with the Blue Raider trio of Hanley Long (women's golf), Costanza Magazzini (women's tennis) and Tom Moonen (men's tennis) each taking the honor for their respective sports.
Middle Tennessee's three honorees give them the third most of any of the league's 14 member institutions, behind only Charlotte and Rice who boast four honorees each.
Long, a May 2019 Organizational Communications graduate who completed her collegiate career with a perfect 4.0 GPA, became Middle Tennessee Women's Golf's first ever Academic All-American following her senior campaign to cap off a slew of awards, both athletic and academic, received in her final go-around.
Middle Tennessee's 2019 True Blue Female President's Award honoree, Long posted a program record and league-best 72.66 stroke average in 2018-19 and set or tied three other program record on her way to being named C-USA's Female Golfer of the year.
An Italy native, Maggazini finished her Blue Raider career ranked in the Top 10 in MT Women's Tennis history in three categories: T-9th all-time with 64 career singles wins, T-5th all-time with 66 career doubles wins and 10th in doubles winning percentage with 60.5% (66-43).
Not only did she excel on the court, but she too exhibited a stellar career in the classroom, finishing her undergraduate degree with a 4.0 GPA in Management/Business Administration.
Moonen heads into his senior year with a multitude of academic and athletic awards, highlighted mostly by his recent accomplishment as a C-USA Spirit of Service Award winner. He ended the season ranked No. 71 nationally in doubles with partner Chris Edge and the pair earned a spot on the All-C-USA Second Team Doubles list after posting an impressive 15-6 record, all at the top spot.
As a student, Moonen majors in Accounting with a GPA of 3.93. He was named to the CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-District At-Large list as well as the C-USA All-Academic Team in recognition for his success in the classroom this year.
