Camp Position Breakdown: Offensive Line

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee's search for a new starting quarterback can be made much easier by quality play from its offensive line.
Head coach Rick Stockstill has repeatedly expressed optimism regarding the line this offseason, saying at the team's season-opening press conference he saw "great leadership up there."
"They continued to get better this summer, and I'm anxious to see our improvement [in camp]," the 14th-year head coach said. "If we can stay healthy, I think we have a chance to be special up there."
Injuries have been a bit of a concern this offseason, with 2018 Honorable Mention All-C-USA recipient Josh Fannin and career 20-game starter Amir Luckett missing time. However, great depth has been built in the trenches, and offensive line coach Rick Mallory has enjoyed what he's seen in camp.
"We've had really good competition," Mallory said. "Guys are rising to the occasion and taking advantage of the situations presented to them.
"It's been a really ideal camp, probably one of the best I've been involved in a really long time just from where competition is concerned. It's a tribute to Coach [Mike] Polly and Coach [Tony] Franklin and the great job those guys do."
New starters are needed all over the line with Chandler Brewer, Carlos Johnson and Robert Behanan all exhausting their eligibility in 2018 and taking with them 116 career starts.
A large cluster of linemen have stood out this offseason and are fighting for playing time, including redshirt seniors Angelo Owens and Jack Mitchell, redshirt juniors Will Gilchrist and Matt Martin, redshirt sophomores Cole Kirby and Eric Seay, and redshirt freshman Marcus Greer. Newcomer Robert Jones, a junior Highland (Kansas) Community College transfer, has also turned some heads.
"You're rewarded if you do well by moving up, and if you don't do well, you'll move down," Mallory said. "It's a long process, but the kids are working hard. They love football and love each other, and they play hard for and against each other."
