Camp Position Breakdown: Special Teams

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — A new NCAA rule in 2018 drastically changed how Middle Tennessee handles part of its special teams.
The NCAA's kickoff fair catch rule, where teams can signal a fair catch on a kickoff and take the ball at the 25, almost took out MT's need to return kicks completely. The Blue Raiders only returned four kicks in 2018 compared to 25 in 2017, making the need for a dynamite kick returner a little less necessary as compared to one who has sure hands.
"The top five teams in the country averaged starting on the 28 or 29-yard line," head coach Rick Stockstill said. "If we fair catch it and start on the 25 every time, we'll be up there towards the top in the country. We'll play that game to game with how we want to approach it."
As for the ones kicking the ball for Middle Tennessee, a competition brewed this offseason for the starting punter spot with Matt Bonadies exhausting his eligibility.
Redshirt junior Matthew Stephenson and newcomers Kyle Ulbrich (R-So., Valparaiso transfer) and Matthew Rigney (Fr.) each rotated while auditioning for the job, and Stockstill liked what he saw out of all three.
"All three of those guys have really punted well," he said. "That's probably as consistent a group as we've had in a few years."
While the Blue Raiders had to find a new punter this offseason, they didn't have the same need at placekicker.
Redshirt junior Crews Holt had a breakout season in 2018, tying the school record in field goal makes by going 18-24, including a perfect 17-17 from inside 40 yards. He's carried that confidence into this year's fall camp, going a combined 12-14 in the two scrimmages with multiple makes of more than 50 yards.
"I've been really pleased with our kicking game," Stockstill said. "Crews has been really good, really consistent in camp."
