Murfreesboro, Tenn. – Head Coach Mark McEntire's second stint at the helm of the Middle Tennessee Men's Golf program officially gets underway Sunday, as the Blue Raiders are set to tee off at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate in Choudrant, La.
The three-day, 54-hole event is hosted by Conference USA foe Louisiana Tech at the Par 72, 7,070-yard Squire Creek Country Club.
"(Assistant Coach) Cody (O'Toole) and I have been looking forward to getting the season started for quite some time," McEntire stated. "I am very happy with the play from our new faces and look forward to seeing some of them in action for us this week at Squire Creek. It is another solid field and a fantastic golf course."
In addition to the host Bulldogs, the Blue Raiders will also get an early look at another league rival as the UAB Blazers are also in the 14-team field. Joining the C-USA trio are Central Arkansas, Georgia, Lamar, Mercer, New Orleans, Nicholls State, Southeastern Louisiana, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State and Troy.
"We will have some conference teams in the field and it will be nice to see where we stand right from the start," McEntire added. "I am looking forward to a good week and getting the young guys some experience."
In his second trip to the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate in as many seasons, McEntire will bring a pair of veterans in senior Tanner Owens and redshirt junior Ilari Saulo.
Owens is coming off of an All-Conference USA campaign in which he sported a 72.4 stroke average and led the Blue Raiders with 14 rounds of par or better and seven Top 20 finishes.
Saulo, a former C-USA Freshman of the Year, is eager to return to the course after taking a medical redshirt during the 2018-19 season as his teammates successfully defended their conference title.
Joining them in the lineup are fellow returner Palmer Sadlowski and freshmen Michael Barnard and Mattias Varjun.
Sadlowski led the Blue Raiders in a rain-shortened week at Squire Creek last season, sporting back-to-back rounds of 1-over par 73.
Barnard and Varjun, as well as fellow freshman Gavin Clements who will compete as an individual, are all making their first Blue Raider appearances.
Tee times begin at 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning, with Varjun leading things off for the Blue Raiders at 8:50. He will be followed by Saulo, Barnard, Owens and Sadlowski with Clements teeing off at 9:40.
