Round 1 Results
PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Middle Tennessee came out on fire in the opening round of the Callaway Gardens Invite, putting the rest of the 10-team field in the rearview with a round of 4-over par 288 that places the Blue Raiders in first after 18 holes.
Three Blue Raiders finished the day high up the leaderboard, as Sophie Burks, Molly Bebelaar and Catherine Caudill each find themselves in the Top 12 in the field of 61 golfers.
Burks claims the top spot on the leaderboard, using a 3-under par 68 that featured four birdies to share the individual lead alongside Central Arkansas' Tania Nunez.
Her four birdies are tied for fifth in the field, while she is also second in Par 3 (E, 3.00) and Par 4 (-2, 3.80) scoring, seventh in Par 5 scoring (-1, 4.67) and eighth in pars (12).
Bebelaar bounced back from a shaky outing at the Lady Red Wolves Classic with a 1-over par 72 on Monday to share sixth place in the individual standings thru 18 holes of play.
Junior Catherine Caudill leveled out a couple of big numbers by matching Burks with a team-high four birdies to finish the day at 2-over par 73 and is currently tied for 12th.
She is also second in the field in Par 5 scoring (-2, 4.33), carding a birdie on two of three Par 5 opportunities in round one.
Caroline Caudill stood even with her younger sister thru 17 holes, but stumbled on 18 and ended the day at 4-over par to sit tied for 26th ahead of round two.
Junior Madison Smith battled through a tough start to finish the day strong with birdies on both 17 and 18 putting her in the clubhouse with a 6-over par 77, while sophomore Taylor Edlin carded an 8-over par 79 to round out MT's scoring.
As a team, Middle Tennessee finished the day in the Top 3 in both total pars (56) and total birdies (13) as well as Par 4 (+7, 4.13) and Par 5 (-3, 4.80) scoring.
"Everyone played pretty solid today, and Sophie put together a great round and was very steady all day," Head Coach Chris Adams said. "We bounced back from tough holes really well today to minimize any damage and keep our scores low. We had a good opening round and have some positive momentum, but we also know some areas where we can improve over the next two days to try to finish this one off strong."
The Blue Raiders look to continue their strong play Tuesday morning as round two begins at 8:30 a.m.
