MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The reigning Conference USA cross country individual champions have started off the 2020 season with another league honor, as Eusila Chepkemei and Jacob Choge were recognized by C-USA on Tuesday with Athlete of the Week awards.
"It's nice to see them both garner a well-deserved award," MT head cross country coach Keith Vroman said. "They have been a staple for this program for the last few years, and I'm proud of what they've helped the team accomplish."
Chepkemei finished with the 13th best time among all 280 competitors in the three flights of the UAB Invitational on Friday. Her time of 20:38.49 in the 6K was the best among any individual C-USA runner in the event and was 38 seconds shy of her personal best time.
Chepkemei's flight included runners from three teams that ended last season in the top 25: No. 1 Arkansas, No. 12 Florida State and No. 22 Ole Miss. The Kapsabet, Kenya native led her team to finish seventh in a grueling flight of 10 teams, including eight that competed in an NCAA Regional or beyond last season. Chepkemei led her Blue Raiders to post the best team average time (21:16.77) of the four C-USA teams that competed in the UAB Invitational.
On the men's side, Choge got his senior season off to a solid start with a time of 24:33.13 in the 8K at the UAB Invitational. Choge finished 24th in his flight and 32nd overall out of the 253 total runners and was a minute and 30 seconds off of his personal best time.
The three-time C-USA cross country champion led the Blue Raiders to finish seventh in a nine-team flight included four teams that competed against MT in the NCAA South Regional last year in addition to three teams that ran alongside the Blue Raiders in the NCAA Championships last season: No. 22 Ole Miss, No. 29 Florida State and No. 30 Arkansas.
Among the three C-USA teams that competed in the UAB Invitational, Choge helped the Blue Raiders post the best team average time (25:05.75) by posting the best time of any C-USA individual runner in the event.
