MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee men's and women's basketball teams will play their remaining non-conference games in Murphy Center without fans, Director of Athletics Chris Massaro announced Friday.
The women's final non-conference game is set for Dec. 20 while the men wrap up on Dec. 22.
"After further consultation with public health officials and the growing concern nationally with basketball, our university leadership and health professionals feel it is in the community's best interest to extend our no-fan policy," said Massaro. "We will make another announcement prior to our conference opener on Jan. 1."
The university made the initial decision to not allow fans on November 21 out of concern about the recent spike in COVID-19 active cases in Rutherford and surrounding counties, as well as guidance from public health officials who have cautioned against large, indoor gatherings.
Only team members, coaches, essential staff, family members of coaches and players and media will be in attendance for games now through Dec. 22.
Massaro said decisions regarding potential refunds will be announced at a later date because of the uncertainty of how many games might be affected because of the pandemic.
