MURFREESBORO – Director of Athletics Chris Massaro announced today that the 2020 football season for Middle Tennessee is officially complete. Following today's Conference USA adjusted schedule release, the Blue Raiders were not slated for any further make-up games.
The Blue Raiders, winners in three of their last five games, started the season on Sept. 5 which was the first Saturday for college football. MT was one of just six games played nationally that day, and for the majority of the season ranked among the nation's Top 5 in number of games played.
"It has been a very long and challenging season and we felt it was time for the players to go home and be with family,"said Massaro. "There's not a book on how to navigate a virus in college football so we were all experiencing it for the first time and learning as we went. All involved deserve a lot of credit. However, our overall record was not to our expectations and standards. All efforts in our football program will now point to focusing on the 2021 football season."
The longer the season went, the better Middle Tennessee improved on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Asher O'Hara was one of the most exciting players in the country, ranking as the fourth leading rusher among signal-callers and placing in the top 25 nationally in completion percentage, passing yards and points responsible for. On defense, Greg Grate turned in a career season and ranked fourth nationally in interceptions while the unit as a whole forced nine turnovers the last four games.
"It's disappointing not to finish out the year but I am extremely proud of the way our players handled every adverse situation thrown at them," stated Head Coach Rick Stockstill. "We won two of our last three games and I thought we were getting much better. We were a different team toward the end of the year and that says a lot about the effort, attitude and toughness we stress each day. We can build on that foundation for the 2021 season. The break will be good for everyone but I can't wait to get back to work and hopefully some normalcy."
There will be information later this week for fans interested in refunds.
