Choge Sets Meet Record Day One of C-USA Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Middle Tennessee track and field teams start the weekend off strong at the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships with several podium finishes and a new meet record.
The majority of the running events that took place on day one were preliminary rounds to see who would continue to compete in the finals tomorrow. Several Blue Raiders clenched spots in the finals across the six events, including nine men and nine women.
Willington Wright qualified for the men's 200-meter dash finals after finishing with a time of 21.61s, and he also qualified in the 400-meter dash along with Jaquez Torian. Brian Rono, Jacob Choge and Hillary Kimaiyo all qualified in the 800-meter run as well as the one mile with the addition of Kigen Chemadi.
Choge and Chemadi both broke a meet record in the men's 5,000-meter, and with Choge being the individual champion, his time of 14:07.32 sets a new meet record. Chemadi claimed third place overall with a time of 14:08.88 and Thobile Mosito finished 10th with a time of 14:50.02. The men's DMR team also took third place out of the nine teams with a final time of 10:07.91.
For the women, Cecilia Francis finished first in the 60-meter dash prelims with a time of 7.46s to advance to the semifinals tomorrow. Shawkia Iddrisu and Agnes Abrocquah qualified in the women's 400-meter dash. Eusila Chepkemei, Francisca Jebor and Paitience Akanwogba qualified in the 800-meter run as well as the one mile run, advancing to the semifinals.
Pamela Kosgei took second place in the women's 5,000-meter finals with a time of 16:53.38, followed by frershman Mercy Chepkurui in fifth. Faith Rono also finished Top-10 with a time of 17:24.47 and Julia Jelagat took 11th place overall. The women's DMR team finished second out of 11 teams with a time of 12:00.10. Akera Benton finished Top-10 in the women's long jump, coming in sixth overall with a mark of 5.93m.
