4/13/2020 2:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Women's soccer head coach Aston Rhoden has lifted the program to new heights on and off the field. He hails from Jamaica but received his bachelor's degree in computer science and mathematics from the University of Alabama-Huntsville.
Rhoden is the all-time winningest coach in soccer program history with a mark of 178-126-33, and has notched a conference record of 30-32-8 since entering Conference USA in 2013. He added a Sun Belt Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance to his impressive resume in 2010.
Entering his 19th season this fall, Rhoden updates us on how the COVID-19 has impacted his life during this unique time.
Check out our interview with Aston:
How have you been doing during this tough time?
It's been quite challenging without practices and the team but it has presented opportunities for me to grow as a person and as a coach.
Why did you decide to start working at MT?
There were so many reasons MTSU was the right fit for me at that time. Some of the more important factors included: (1) The vision that Athletic Director Boots Donnelly and SWA Diane Turnham had for the program aligned with mine; (2) I was very impressed with the President's involvement and support of athletics; (3) The opportunity to make the program more successful than it's ever been; (4) and the close proximity of the university to my extended family.
What has been your fondest memory here at MT and can you describe it?
Having been here 20 years there has been so many wonderful memories. Winning the first women's soccer championship conference title in 2004 was special but honestly watching the professional and personal growth of the soccer alumni and the impact they are having in their respective careers continues to create great memories for me.
Have you learned any new skills or hobbies in this unique time?
Not really. I've just started reading and working out more. After all, I am still working from home!
What makes you enjoy your job as much as you do?
My job is like a hobby for me, so I enjoy most everything about it. I especially like to help my players grow into great persons and leaders and I really like competing against other coaches.
Do you have anything to share with the Blue Raider family and friends?
These are unprecedented times and it's really easy to see only the negative things associated with COVID-19. However, with every crisis comes opportunities. Choose the proper lens to view this crisis through and you will find so many opportunities to grow as a person and to help your fellow Blue Raider. We are strong and will prevail. Stay safe…Stay healthy… Stay Blue. Thank you!
