Blue Raiders earn three postseason awards
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee Men's Tennis team was awarded by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association with three postseason awards announced Monday.
Tom Moonen was named the Ohio Valley Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship and the Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship awards. These honors are the first of his career, and it comes seven days after learning his return for the 2020-21 season. These individual accolades are added to his already impressive list over his career.
ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship award - This prestigious award, which dates back to 1982, is presented to the men's and women's national student-athletes who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
ITA Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship award - The ITA's longest-running award honors a Division I men's student-athlete who displays sportsmanship, character, excellent academics and has had outstanding playing accomplishments.
"Congrats to Tom," Borendame said. "Tom has been a great example on and off the court his entire time at Middle Tennessee. He has been an outstanding leader for our young guys and I appreciate all that he has done for the program."
Additionally, the Blue Raiders claimed an honorable mention for the Ohio Valley Region Community Service Award. Community service work for the Blue Raiders in 2019-20 included reading to children in local elementary schools, teaching tennis in local PE classes, hosting Murfreesboro City Schools for a free clinic, and partnering with Buddy Up and the Boys and Girls Club for free clinics.
"Congrats to our guys on earning an honorable mention for the ITA community service award," Borendame said. "We have actually won it all three years they have even offered the award. Community service is a pillar to our programs foundation and I am proud of the guys and the work they have put in for this award."
