MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Soccer (8-7-1, 4-3 C-USA) fell in a tough overtime road battle with the Rice Owls (10-5-1, 4-3 C-USA) on Friday evening at Holloway Field.
Junior Cambell Kivisto led the Blue Raiders in the contest, scoring her second goal of the season. Kivisto took two shots in the contest, putting both on goal. Senior Peyton DePriest tallied a team-high four shots, while also putting a team-high three on target. Senior Miya Lennon and sophomore Eleanor Gough also recorded multiple shots in the contest, recording three and two, respectively.
Junior Hannah Suder played between the posts, playing all 103 minutes in net and recording a save for the Blue Raiders.
Middle Tennessee started slow out of the gate, as the Owls outscored the Blue Raiders 5-1 over the first 15 minutes of the contest.
The Owls opened up the scoring in the contest after Rice's Natalie Gorji netted the opening score in the 19th minute, 1-0.
The Blue Raiders recorded three shots over the final 25 minutes of the period, however the Owls committed six shots during the same time, but both sides headed into the locker room with the Owls holding the 1-0 advantage.
After making some halftime adjustments, the Blue Raiders flipped the script after coming out of the break.
The Blue Raiders played aggressively looking to even the game, outshooting the Owls 6-1, including a 3-0 advantage with shots on target through the 70th minute.
In the 71st minute, DePriest drew a foul in the penalty box to secure a penalty kick for the Blue Raiders. However, Rice's Killgore was able to predict DePriest's shot and saved the penalty kick to keep the deficit at one.
However, less than five minutes later, Gough delivered a ball to Kivisto from half pitch. Kivisto showed off her excellent footwork, juking two Rice defenders, before punching in the equalizing goal past the conference saves leader, Rice's Killgore, to put the Blue Raiders on the board in the 75th minute and bring the match even at one apiece, 1-1.
Both sides recorded a pair of shots through the final 15 minutes of the regulation, but neither team could find the back of the net as the match headed to overtime.
The Owls recorded a shot in the first overtime period, but the Owls second shot of overtime was the one that counted as Delaney Schultz headed in the golden-goal off a corner kick to give Rice the 2-1 win after 103 minutes of play.
