When you look back through Blue Raider football history, there is one man in particular who seems to fill up the record book. That man would be former running back and Blue Raider Hall of Fame member Dwone Hicks, who played for Middle Tennessee from 1999-2002. During that time, he would set multiple records within the Blue Raider program and even be named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year in 2001.
Hicks' playing career is full of astounding performances that will live in Blue Raider history. One such performance came on October 7, 2000 when Hicks would rush for six touchdowns and 311 yards, both of which are still the most by a player in a single game in Middle Tennessee history.
While this was an impressive performance for Hicks, it wasn't his favorite memory from playing for the Blue Raiders. That came in 2001 and 2002 when Middle Tennessee would beat Vanderbilt in back-to-back years. Hicks says this was special to him because of all the trash-talking that came with the game and the excitement of the fans after beating a close rival.
"Going up there and beating them after all the trash talking and getting to feel the excitement of the fans made that special," Hicks said. "I have a lot of great memories from my time at MTSU but those are two I will always remember."
While Hicks' playing career may be over, he is still doing great things off the field. He currently resides in Georgia, where he is a teacher at Centerville Elementary and cuts hair at his barbershop, Nomadic Barber Shop.
Hicks loves being a teacher and was able to find his passion for it through coaching. However, his true passion and something he sees himself doing full time in the future is cutting hair.
"I've always had an interest in cutting hair," Hicks said. "During high school and college I would cut some of my friends' hair."
Hicks says he loves being able to transform people and provide them with confidence through a haircut.
"I do enjoy it because it is a kind of a release for me to see someone transform from a head that doesn't look that good to they end up having confidence when they leave the chair, I enjoy doing that," Hicks said.
As Hicks continues to live his life outside of football, he is able to continue learning more about himself.
"I've always been sort of artsy and enjoyed art and poetry, but was so engulfed in football that a lot of that stuff didn't surface," Hicks said.
After football, Hicks has pursued this more artistic side of himself through his barbershop.
Hicks' storied career on the football field is something that will live forever in the heart of Blue Raider fans; however, he is making a much more significant impact on people's lives after football, whether in a classroom or by transforming somebody in his barbershop.
