MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — A dominant weekend at the plate has resulted in a league honor, as Conference USA announced Monday that Kelci Hill has been named Hitter of the Week following Middle Tennessee's 3-1 series win over Marshall.
"She's just a pure hitter. From the get-go, she was an RBI producer for us," MT head coach Jeff Breeden said of Hill. "She's got a pure swing, and we haven't had to mess with her mechanics much. She sees the ball well and has power. Her short game gets her going as you saw yesterday when she bunted for a single then hits a bomb after that."
MT's sophomore center fielder posted a .643 batting average with 9 hits, a double, a triple, her first two career home runs, eight RBIs, a 1.286 slugging percentage, and a .688 on base percentage in the four-game set against the Thundering Herd. She also tied for the team-lead in sacrifice hits with two and was a perfect 13-for-13 in fielding opportunities.
The Murrieta, California product entered the week with two three-hit performances this season and doubled that over the weekend, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and her first career homer in the first game of the weekend and capped the series with a 3-for-3 day and her second round-tripper on Sunday. In the game two 10-inning win over the Herd, Hill scored a new career high four runs, including the game winning run.
"Her consistency impresses me the most," Breeden added. "She's somebody you can count on. Not that she's always going to be successful, but you know for sure she's going to have a good at bat. I don't think she's had a poor at bat since she's been here. Even when she strikes out, she's giving you everything she's got, and you never question that."
Monday's league announcement marks the second time the Blue Raiders have taken home Hitter of the Week honors, as Summer Burgess won the weekly award on March 8. Corrina Dodd followed with a Pitcher of the Week honor on March 22.
Hill and the Blue Raiders stay home this week for a four-game set against C-USA rival Western Kentucky, which begins Friday at 6 p.m. CT. Fan attendance will be limited, and face coverings and social distancing is required at all times while at the ballpark. Saturday's doubleheader will be streamed on ESPN+, and Friday and Sunday's contests can be seen on CUSA.tv.
