MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – In a battle between two teams fighting for the last spot in the Conference USA Tournament, Florida Atlantic came out on top, 2-0, over the Middle Tennessee women's soccer team at Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium.
With the loss tonight combined with a draw between Western Kentucky and Old Dominion, the Blue Raiders are officially out of contention for the tournament while FAU clinched a spot in the bracket.
Middle Tennessee outshot the Owls, 14-8, but FAU was efficient as its only two shots on goal found the back of the net.
Both teams had their opportunities in the first half as the Owls had a shot go off the cross bar and another go off the post while Maddison Falter had the best opportunity of the night for MTSU in the 41st minute as she was alone with the keeper, but her shot went off the post.
With less than a minute before halftime, FAU broke through as Amanda Martin scored off a corner with a header over Hannah Suder's outstretched arms.
The Owls doubled their lead in the 53rd minute as Sammy Vitols took a pass from Miracle Porter and fired a shot past Suder.
Down 2-0, the Raiders tried to break through but nealry every time they went on the attack, the FAU defense was there to halt it in its tracks as MTSU only mustered three more shots the rest of the game.
The Raiders will wrap up the season next Thursday when they travel to Marshall. Kickoff from Huntington, West Virginia is set for 7 p.m.
