DADE CITY, Fla. – Middle Tennessee will compete for the Conference USA title Wednesday in the Championship's final group after wrapping up round two on Tuesday in a tie for second at 4-over par (294-286=580).
The Blue Raiders (+4) will look up the leaderboard at only WKU (E), while No. 33 North Texas (+4) joins MT in the two-way tie for second. No. 49 (+9) UTSA is five strokes back before another 11-stroke drop-off on the leaderboard to fifth place Southern Miss (+20).
"I'm really proud of the effort out there today and everyone is really sticking to the game plan and having some fun even though the weather has been challenging," Head Coach Chris Adams stated. "When we came out to finish the round today, our goal was to put ourselves in a position to compete for the title on Wednesday, and I think we did exactly that.
"We knew it would be difficult with the second round being split between yesterday and today, but we came out with the same focus we had yesterday and posted the best team score of the day to close the gap."
Senior Sophie Burks and junior Catherine Caudill led the charge on day two, both sharing the second best round on the course at 2-under par 70.
Burks is now tied for fourth at 2-under par (72-70=142) on the week while Caudill has moved into the Top 10 at 1-over par (75-70=145) thru 36 holes.
Veteran Caroline Caudill – competing in her fourth Conference USA Championship with classmate Burks – moved up the leaderboard and into the Top 20 on Wednesday with a 1-over par 73 making her 4-over par (75-73=148) on the week.
Taylor Edlin had a strong round going until a tough stretch in the final six holes and is now 7-over par (72-79=151) while fellow sophomore Molly Bebelaar is 9-over par (80-73=153) after a bounce back round of 1-over par 73 in round two.
"Our team has played really solid like I know they are capable of," Adams added. "Sophie and Catherine are playing really strong to be in the Top 10 here and the whole team is playing with confidence. I believe we will come out tomorrow and continue to have some fun on this course and the forecast looks like we will finally have some sun as well!"
Wednesday's final round will begin with tee times at 8:00 a.m. ET on holes 1 and 10. Live scoring can be followed on Golfstat.com.
