MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Hard work on the diamond and in the classroom has paid off for Middle Tennessee shortstop Summer Burgess, who was named to Conference USA's All-Academic Team, the league announced Monday.
Burgess graduated with her bachelor's degree in exercise science last year and currently boasts a 4.0 GPA in the Public Health master's program while also being a leader on the softball field for the Blue Raiders.
"Summer's internal drive makes her a great student athlete," MT head coach Jeff Breeden said of the program's all-time leader in hits, games played and games started. "She has a drive to be the best on the field, in the classroom and in everything she does. She likes to win, and everything for her is a competition, whether it's grades or softball."
This season, Burgess is second on the team with a .311 batting average and leads the Blue Raiders in runs scored (29) and doubles (11) and is tied for the team-lead with three triples and 14 stolen bases. The Delray Beach, Florida native is also in the top 10 in C-USA for runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, at bats and stolen bases.
"I'm so grateful for softball because I was able to use it to help further my education," Burgess said. "I'm a first generation college student in my family, and the fact that I was able to not only complete my bachelors degree, but to also start my master's in Public Health all while doing what I love is the most amazing opportunity that I've had."
"I'm thankful for MTSU and my coaches for giving me the chance to compete at a high level of softball and complete my college degrees."
Monday's announcement isn't Burgess's first academic honor in her time at Middle Tennessee. She was listed on the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll all four of her undergraduate years, earned a C-USA Academic Medal in 2017 and 2018, was named an NFCA All-Academic Scholar in 2017 and 2019, and was previously on the C-USA All-Academic Team in 2018.
Burgess and her Blue Raider teammates take the field against UTSA Wednesday at 12 p.m. CT in the first game of the C-USA Championship, held this year in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
