MOBILE, Ala. – The Middle Tennessee women's golf team was able to keep their second-place spot through two rounds (282, 286), only adding four strokes to their round one total at the USA Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of South Alabama at Magnolia Grove Crossing Golf Course.
The Blue Raiders put together a consistent 286 (-2) that saw them play the front nine in two-under and the back nine on par. The women now sit nine strokes out of first after Sam Houston scored a 274 (-14) in round two, leaping both Middle Tennessee and South Florida.
Graduate Student Sophie Burks continues her excellent play on day two with another 68 (-4). After stroking five birdies on day one she was able to follow it up with four more on Sunday. Burks finds herself in third in the field of 96 student-athletes, two strokes behind a current two-way tie for first.
Graduate student Caroline Caudill found herself four strokes behind Burks with 72 (E) in round two after an opening-round 69 (-3) on Saturday, good enough to keep her in a tie for eighth. Senior Catherine Caudill was a stroke behind her sister with 73 (+1) after a day one score of 70 (-2), finding herself just one stroke out of the top 10 through two days.
Junior Molly Bebelaar cut two strokes off of her opening-round score of 75 (+3), with a round two score of 73 (+1). The day two improvement saw Bebelaar leap up from 41st to a tie for 34th. Junior Taylor Edlin added a stroke from day one, ending the second round with a 77 (+5), good enough for a six-way tie at 71st.
Senior Madison Smith took the biggest leap of the day as an individual, cutting eight strokes from her round one score with a 73 (+1) on day two.
QUOTING COACH ADAMS
"Had another great round by the team today," head coach Chris Adams said. "Just didn't have as many birdies today but gave ourselves a lot of chances. Sophie played great again with four under and is in the running as well as having Caroline and Catherine in the top 11, all under par. We have another day to finish up a great tourney and we are going to give it our best effort."
